Cyril Lafferty

Cyril joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16 and later specialised as a Clearance Diving Officer, dealing with underwater bombs and mines, before being invited to join the United States Navy’s Sealab III project, which established the techniques and technology of Saturation Diving, the basis of all today’s commercial work.

Before leaving the Royal Navy for the boom days of North Sea Oil exploration, he was the Captain of the Navy’s only Deep Diving research vessel, HMS Reclaim.

He developed an interest in the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy when he and his wife became ill, and installed a chamber in his own garage. Conversations with John Hambly about the possibility of setting up a facility at the Samson centre followed, and Cyril’s chamber is now one of the two installed in the Samson Centre.

In addition to working one day a week as a chamber operator in the Samson Centre, Cyril is also the Senior Training Advisor for the 60 centres that are members of the National MS Therapy Centres group. He really enjoys his involvement with the Samson Centre and is very pleased with the way that oxygen treatment is being used in conjunction with physiotherapy and exercise regimes.
