Get to know Vicky Bassett

Vicky Bassett – Deputy Lead Physio

A little about me
I love being outdoors and with animals. I spend a lot of time looking after and riding
my horse, and training our new family puppy (although a lot of the time is actually
training my husband and daughter to not ruin my training) !

I will have been a qualified physiotherapist for 20 years in 2023! That is a scary fact,
but I genuinely still enjoy my job and spending time with people. I have specialised
in working with people with neurological conditions for the last 15 years in a mixture
of settings including hospitals and the community. I really enjoy problem solving and
supporting people with rehabilitation programmes and being imaginative in finding
ways to make things more engaging.

Me at the Samson Centre
I work at the Centre Wednesday- Friday. The 3 days combine an opportunity for
one-to-one sessions, groups and standing sessions. I lead two online classes, a
standing balance session that aims to combine balance, fitness and strengthening
principles whilst standing. I also lead a seated HIIT (high intensity interval training)
class. It is a chair based, air punching class frenzy! The intervals try to optimise
working as hard as possible cardiovascularly without unduly exacerbating fatigue or
overheating. It is also a great way to burn off some energy by air boxing.

Despite a reputation for torture, I hope that all my treatment/ exercise sessions bring
a balance of challenge and showing people what they can do whilst building
confidence. I’m always keen to involve a ball in an exercise, or boxing or dancing,
and confess to far too many Strictly Come Dancing references. I suspect there is a
secret ballroom dancer within me and I am also always looking for a good discussion
in sessions to explore Netflix recommendations!

What I love about the Samson Centre
Having the opportunity to really get to know people and time to explore issues and
optimise opportunities. The sense of camaderie between members and staff creates
a strong sense of being a team, and together we can find ways to overcome the
challenges of living with MS.
