What Disability Equipment is Available?

Tracy Nicholas – Member

Hi, I’m Tracy Nicholas and had MS for 15 years. I am one of the unlucky few who’s mobility has been impacted very swiftly since diagnoses. Luckily we can all have access to the majority of equipment through-out occupational therapist, however we are not always aware of what is available.
By writing this article I am hoping that going forward via this newsletter we can all communicate to all members of the Samson centre any new or existing equipment we become aware of.
For example I discovered the Etac patient turn table at the Samson Centre and following this contacted my OT and one was delivered. However, after a few years I had to rely on my husband because it became too difficult for my PAs to assist me. After several months we decided there had to be something else available. We searched the internet and came across a standing hoist (see photo) this has been a real game changer for me and my husband. We contacted Millbrook Health Care directly and they confirmed that this is a stock item and following approval from my OT it arrived.
I have told others and nobody else was aware of its existence or availability.
Over the years I have found these  not so widely used aids really helpful as my disability progressed .

1/ Four way slide bedsheet to assist with turning me over or adjusting positions.
2/ Banana transfer board to assist from wheelchair to car, toilet etc
3/ Transfer turntable to assist moving legs into a car etc

I think it will benefit us all by communicating what equipment we come across in the future I hope you agree.
